Designated in November, 2018

IMR was designated as a Joint Usage/Research Center in Materials Science in 2009 and, subsequently, an International Joint Usage/Research Center in Materials Science in 2018, as one of the four Universities and six locations.

IMR is a university-affiliated research institute that has led Japan's materials science research since its establishment in 1916, and is internationally recognized as a leader in the field. The Institute established the International Collaboration Center (ICC-IMR) in 2008 as a proprietary program, and has been working to revitalize international collaboration for ten years.

The "International Joint Usage/Research Center for Materials Science" aims to form an international collaboration system in materials science that unites domestic and international researchers and institutions, and to take the lead in strengthening Japan's research capabilities in materials science, while fostering young, internationally recognized scientists.

In order to efficiently promote high-quality international research collaborations, this center has offered the following programs.
・"Bridge-type challenges" which bridge the gap between internal and external researchers
・"Twin Principal Investigator Program" to promote international activities of young researchers
・The "Overseas Study Sites-Dojo" to support young researchers to travel abroad to conduct          research

Promote cross-border activities for the development of materials science and through it the solution of common problems of human society.
